Texas Leads the Nation

With nearly 29,000 registered aircraft, Texas holds the top spot for total aircraft registrations in the United States. The combination of a massive land area, a strong oil and gas industry that relies on aviation, numerous military installations, and a culture of private flying all contribute to Texas dominance. Large cities like Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio each anchor major general aviation airports, and the wide-open spaces of West Texas make personal aircraft practical in ways that dense urban areas do not.

California and Florida Round Out the Top Three

California comes in second with roughly 26,000 registered aircraft, driven by a large population, a wealthy tech and entertainment industry, and an extensive network of general aviation airports. The state geography — from the Bay Area to Los Angeles to the agricultural Central Valley — makes aviation practical for both business and pleasure.

Florida ranks third with around 21,000 aircraft, fueled by tourism, retirees who fly for leisure, flight training schools, and a robust charter and air taxi industry serving the Keys and Gulf Coast.

The Delaware Anomaly

The most surprising entry in the top-ten list is Delaware, which ranks fourth despite being one of the smallest states by area and population. Delaware ranking is a direct result of its business-friendly incorporation laws — many aircraft are registered to holding companies or trusts incorporated in Delaware for legal and tax reasons, even though the planes themselves may never fly near the state. Delaware aircraft registrations deserve their own explanation.

Washington and Alaska

Washington state high ranking reflects the presence of Boeing commercial aircraft manufacturing operations, along with a strong tech sector in the Seattle area. Alaska position in the top ten is even more remarkable given its relatively small population — aviation is genuinely essential infrastructure in Alaska, where roads do not exist to many communities. Alaska aircraft per capita surpass every other state by a wide margin.
